What happened since the honeymoon?

  • Are you mad at your partner all the time?
  • Do you feel like your partner is selfish?
  • Do innocent conversations suddenly escalate into arguments?
  • Does your partner misinterpret what you say?
  • Do you feel emotionally distant from your partner?
If you answered YES to any of the above questions, this book was written for you!

For more than 40 years, Dr. Rugel has observed how quickly spouses feel disregarded in marriage and respond in a manner that upsets the partner. Their tranquil interactions then spiral into an unpleasant argument or into emotional distancing. Based on concepts from family systems theory, Dr. Rugel guides the reader through the process of recognizing and avoiding these destructive patterns, thus helping to bring the relationship back to harmony. In this book you will:

  • Learn why spouses get stuck in repetitive, useless arguments.
  • Explore why your partner might perceive you as the enemy.
  • Discover the behaviors that commonly threaten our partners.
  • Determine what you need to work on to improve your marriage.
  • Conquer your own defensive/self-protective tendencies.
  • Recover the friend and lover your partner used to be.

Taming Marital Arguments:
  Breaking Out of the T.R.A.P
Author:  Robert P. Rugel, PhD
Publisher:  Loving Healing Press
ISBN:  978-1-61599-019-1

Dr. Rugel has spent more than 40 years working with couples struggling their way through marital difficulty.  He's observed how quickly the partners in a relationship can begin to feel distance and indifference grow into a sense of feeling disregarded in the relationship.  That feeling then can quickly lead into a seemingly inevitable spiral of arguments and general unpleasantness.  Not the way to finding long term happiness in any marital relationship.

Basing his work on proven and documented concepts of family systems theory, Dr. Rugel has implemented this guide to help couples learn to recognize destructive patterns, and then learn to avoid them altogether.  This book offers invaluable lessons for all relationships.  Topics covered include:  determining the problem areas in your marriage, improving the relationship in the areas that are problematic, why we get stuck in damaging, useless or repetitive behavior and arguments, why partners often perceive each other as the enemy, common marital "hot zones", conquiring your self-protective and/or defensive tendencies, and restoring your relationship as both friends and lovers.  I think the inclusion of case studies is particularly useful.  The case studies not only help illustrate specific situations, but encourage the hope couples can feel by seeing problems they may be experiencing worked through by other couples.

I would recommend this book highly to anyone with marital problems, or even happy couples who want to avoid the common pitfalls.  Counselors would find this an excellent reference to recommend to clients, as well.
