Crossing Borders—the second in the murder mystery series that began with Murder By the Numbers— features Eddie DeSilva, San Diego?s Portuguese-American ex-chief of police and psychologist, Pauline Graham. The novel won FIRST PLACE in the San Diego Book Awards (as an unpublished manuscript). From the Back Cover:
Somewhere in the shadows of America’s Finest City, a killer hides.
Caught in a storm while sailing back from Mexico, Eddie DeSilva, San Diego’s Portuguese-American ex-chief of police, is facing a watery death when a mysterious stranger saves his life. When he reaches port, DeSilva gets a chance to return the favor: Four months earlier, the wife of his rescuer— a victim of domestic violence hiding in a woman’s shelter— turned up dead on her kitchen floor, her throat slit with a kitchen knife. Her husband, charged with her murder, has disappeared . . . until he shows up on DeSilva’s boat. Despite the overwhelming evidence of his guilt, DeSilva doggedly sets out to prove his rescuer’s innocence, and in the process uncovers hidden aspects of the victim’s life.
Pauline Graham, a psychologist on the board of directors of the woman’s shelter where the murder victim was residing, is conducting her own investigation into alleged financial improprieties at the non-profit. Her interest in DeSilva, a widower and former client, is not entirely professional, and as they resume their ill-defined but evolving relationship, their investigations inevitably intersect in a sinister and twisted scenario in which the hunters become the hunted. Set against the colorful background of San Diego, this second novel in the Eddie DeSilva series, is a page-turning murder mystery with an edge.
Crossing Borders by Richard Hicks is an edge-of-your-seat mystery that will keep you guessing until the very end. Retired police Chief Eddie DeSilva is shocked when finds out that the man who saved his life is actually wanted for murder. When the man declares his innocence despite the overwhelming evidence against him, DeSilva decides the least he can do is look into the matter. During the investigation he crosses paths with Pauline Graham, a psychologist he has worked with before, who is examining some financial inconsistencies at the woman’s shelter where the murder victim had been staying. Are the two cases related and did the police arrest the right man? DeSilva will find the truth, no matter what the cost.
This is the third Richard Hicks book I have read and I must say his writing just keeps getting better with each novel. As with his other books, the plot manages to be intricate, without being confusing, and exciting, without being over-the-top. The illegal immigration and trafficking angles are well researched and blend seamlessly into the story while adding depth to the twisting and turning action. It is a well executed mystery that kept me turning the page well into the night.
Crossing Borders is the second book in the Eddie DeSilva mystery series and I honestly can’t wait for more. This one exceeded my expectations in every way and I can’t wait to read what Mr. Hicks has in store for the next Eddie DeSilva novel.
