My name is Tommy McInnis, co-author of the book, “Last Stop: A Survivor’s Story.” I never thought I would become homeless, always referring them as “bums” or “drunks.” I have never believed the stories people tell about underground civilizations of human beings. That is, until as a young man, I became one myself. After 5 years of homelessness, I actually recovered and find myself today functioning and living a normal life. A couple of years after that, I knew that I had to go back and help those who were still there.
The other part of the story is that while I was living on the streets, there was this cop who used to bother me every morning and kick me out of the subways. Later, when I got that job with the homeless outreach team, I was paired with the NYPD Homeless Outreach Unit liaison officer. It was the same cop from before
I co-wrote wrote a book with the same police officer, Nelson Velez, about my homeless experiences and subsequent work with the homeless population in the NYC Transit system, “Last Stop: A Survivor’s Story.”
