February 1968: it's the height of the Cold War between the United States and the USSR. Each side is working hard to find the ultimate weapon to tip the scales in their favor. When Dr. Alexi Truskov discovers the MAD principle, he realizes that his country's leaders see only the military potential and decides he must defect. He sabotages the first test of this new weapon and fakes his death, barely escaping with his life to the United States. On the eve of test of American military's Project ANUBIS, which incorporates MAD, another threat emerges: two Soviets sent to retrieve the MAD device and bring back Truskov. Major Dan Dawson is in charge of ANUBIS and Capt. Dutch Von Bremer is flying the plane. What happens during the test sets the stage for a future these two can't possibly foresee.

This Way Madness Comes by Robert Alan combines two of my favorite genres, the spy thriller and science fiction.  The MAD principle, around which the plot revolves, has been a staple of science fiction stories since nearly the beginning. As an Air Force veteran, Alan weaves a story guaranteed to keep you on the edge of your seat and cause you to lose a lot of sleep. If you are a fan of Clancy, you should read This Way Madness Comes. I give this book 5/5 stars.
