Author & Publisher Questions and Answers
Q&A on getting your books reviewed

How do I become a book reviewer?

Before you complete the application form, please read the Reviewer Guidelines. We only accept serious reviewers that are willing to go the extra mile to read the book and post reviews to at least ten of our approved websites. This is not a site where you can just get free books for your reading pleasure and not botter to submit a review. If you flake out on us, you'll be responsible for paying for the books directly to the author or publisher.

How many books do I have to review?

Author/publishers will list the books they want reviewed. You may choose any books or as many books as you would like to review, however, keep in mind the review must be submitted within 3 weeks from receiving the book. Please allow one week for mailing. We prefer that you commit to at least 2 books per month.

How long is the review?

The book must be read. Upon completion you will write a review no less than 300 words and no more than 600 words (3 to 4 paragraphs.)

Will I get paid to review books?

There is no monetary compensation, however, you get to keep the publication. You may keep the book, pass it on to a friend, donate it to a charity or sell it.

Do I hold the copyright to the review?

We will not copyright the book review. Your name will be attached to the review. However, you do give permission to the authors/publishers to use the review in whole or excepts of as long as they give you credit. They can also, if they choose, cite your name and ReviewTheBook.com in their publicity.

What if I want books from a specific author or publisher?

We only have books that are listed by the author/publisher/publicist.  If you are looking for a specific book by an author or publisher already in our data base but the book isn't here, then contact us and we will pass the request to them.

Why do you charge a deposit fee?

We charge a $75.00 deposit fee.  Why do we do that?  This is to eliminate those of you that only want free books to read.  We have another review site and over the past years we've had reviewers that signed up, received books and then we've never heard of them.  The mandatory deposit fee is for us to know you are serious.

However, the good news is that if you are a reviewer in good standing for one year, we will refund your total  fee and you will then become an honorary reviewer.  If you decide to quit before the year is up, we will refund your fee to you providing you are in good standing but we will keep 15% for our admin costs.  Thanks for understanding why we have to do this; we are trying to be fair to everyone.

Do you have guidelines for writing reviews?

Consider these questions when writing your review:

  • What is the author's main point or plot?
  • How successful do you think the author was in carrying out the purpose of the publication?
  • How well does the author write? You can use a brief quotation to illustrate your observations. If CD/DVD, how well does the presenter get the point across?
  • Who is the book for? (general reader, genre interest, specialized audience, age range, orientation, etc.)
  • Your personal experiences that relate to the topic. Your personal opinion. Your favorite part or what you learned.
  • Your recommendation. This could pertain to editing issues, future publications, or story line.
  • The conclusion ties together the review and provides a comment. This is usually the part that is used for an excerpt of the review.
  • Be creative! Give your own honest and fair opinion. Be candid. Authors love the personal flair that you give the review.

What if I don't like the book I received?

Contact us immediately.  Please do not write a negative review just because you don't like the book.  We will discuss it with you as to the next step.  We are adamant that reading is a pleasure and there is no need to read something that just doesn't resonate with you.

I sent a request to the author/publisher but haven't received the book yet.

Please give it at least a week to receive you book.  If you haven't, please contact us immediately.  It's possible the email was filtered out and they never did receive the request.

I don't want to review anymore. What do I do?

Contact us immediately.  If you are a reviewer in good standing your deposit fee will be refunded. We will keep 15% to cover admin costs but you will get the rest.

Will you edit my book review?

ReviewTheBook does not have a policy of grammatically editing your review so please be sure you use proper grammar and spelling. Double-check your reviews closely on the preview page before confirming your review.

A well written book review is a reflection on you, not us.

How long do I have to review the book?

You have a total of 3 weeks from the time they receive the book to the time you are required to post the review on all 10 sites and post your review links on ReviewTheBook.com.

If unforeseen circumstances happen, please contact us immediately.

What do I do after I post the reviews?

The author or publisher will be automatically sent an email that you've posted the review.

Be sure to record your links on ReviewTheBook.com by logging into your account, clicking on "Reviewed Books", then "Post Review Links" button to record links to each of the sites you posted on.

What do I do if code appears in my review on the preview?

Sometimes when you copy and paste between applications such as Microsoft Word, the output from Word includes additional markup comments and styling added by Microsoft Word.  Your post will be exactly as shown on the Preview screen, so if you see errors or additional markup in the preview, you need to change the posting.  Just open up a text editor like Notepad, paste your review there, remove any extraneous comments or styling.  Once your review is clean, paste it on the site.
